1. National parks - the most beautiful Finnish nature

Suomen kauneimmat kansallispuistot

National parks are large nature reserves of more than 1,000 hectares. They are the most beautiful Finnish nature and our real natural treasures! Their primary purpose is to protect biodiversity, but they also give people the opportunity to enjoy and relax in nature. There are 41 national parks in Finland, which are managed by Metsähallitus' Nature Services and offer free basic services such as nature trails and rest areas.

Finnish nature typical for each locality can be found in the national parks. They want to protect and preserve the most valuable part of our nature. There are many natural attractions and breathtaking national landscapes in the national parks.

National parks are popular excursion destinations, the number of visits of which has constantly increased. You can find more information about Finland's national parks on the Luontoon.fi website.

Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park

Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park is Finland's oldest national park. It is the third largest national park with a size of 102,000 ha. The landscape is dominated by a chain of fells about a hundred kilometers long, and the silhouette of the Pallastunturire is one of Finland's national landscapes. The nature of the national park is a unique landscape of fells, forests and swamps. Urho Kekkonen National Park

Urho Kekkonen National Park is a paradise for hikers with its vast wilderness areas. It is the second largest national park in Finland. The national park is located in the area of the municipalities of Savukoski, Sodankylä and Inari, and there is also the mystical home of Santa Claus, Korvatunturi. Round-capped fells, dense forests and vast monkey swamps are part of the nature of the national park, as are the forested boreholes, the vast upland areas between the river branches on the slope of the fell. The UK national park offers refuges for our wilderness fauna, and there you can come across a bear, a wolverine or even an eagle. However, the most common inhabitants are reindeer, hares and foxes.

Nuuksio National Park

Nuuksio National Park is located near the capital region and spreads over the areas of Espoo, Kirkkonummi and Vihti. Nuuksio is one of Finland's most popular national parks. Its varied nature is rich with green groves, dense spruce forests and rugged rock pines. The landforms are wonderfully shaped by the Ice Age. Small marshes and lakes and ponds with rocky shores make it a real gem of nature for people of all ages. In Nuuksio, you might come across its signature animal, the endangered flying squirrel. However, bumping into Finland's largest land mammal moose is more likely, as the timid flying squirrels move mainly at night.

Koli National Park

Finland's best-known and most loved national landscape is certainly the landscape opening from the top of Koli to Pieline. Koli National Park offers much more than high dangers and wonderful lake views to Pieline. In Koli, you can also find old forests, rocks, marshes, streams, sandy beaches, islands, and in the beginning of the summer, colorful flowering meadows. Interesting excursion destinations are the Tarhapuro waterfall, which especially roars magnificently in the spring, and the Pirunkirko cave, which is a 33-meter-long crevice cave, a landmark left by the ice. Among others, Jean Sibelius, Eero Järnefelt and Juhani Aho have sought inspiration from these landscapes.

Pyhä-Luosto National Park

In Pyhä-Luosto National Park you can find Finland's southernmost large fell area. The mountain range stands out clearly from the low and flat surroundings, and it alternates between treeless Laet, or keros, and deep gorges. Pyhätunturi's Isokuru is one of Lapland's steepest landscapes. The national park also has beautiful monkey meadows and up to 400-year-old forest that has been completely spared from logging. Kuukkeli, the lucky bird, is the signature species of the national park. They are often very curious and friendly birds. Our selection also includes wooden Kuukkeli jewelry and a Kuukkeli knife.

Repove National Park

Repovede National Park, located in Kouvola and Mäntyharju, is a mosaic landscape of water bodies and forests. There are steep rocky cliffs and dozens of clear lakes and ponds. These wonderful and varied bodies of water offer a good way to get to know the national park. For example, by renting a canoe, you can experience and see unique nature from another perspective. The large height differences, raven forests and small forest ponds remind us of the nature of Lapland, and Repovesi has been given the additional name "little Lapland".

Sipoonkorvi National Park is a wilderness near the capital. There you can find the raven-like forests of southern Finland, steep cliffs and marshy wilderness, and villages surrounded by traditional landscapes. The turmoil of the Ice Age is very visible in the soil and rock bed of the national park, and there are several fascinating hiidenkirnu. There are only a few waterfowl in the area, but almost all southern Finnish forest mammal and bird species thrive in the park.
